Umbreon's Lair

Mankar Camoran's
Commentaries on the Mysterium Xarxes

I have to admit, the first time I played Oblivion and read Commentaries on the Mysterium Xarxes, I really could have cared less about what it said, as opposed to figuring out what it wanted me to do to progress the story. However, once I got further into the lore of the TES series I started to notice that it had some interesting things to say.

As for how much of these books are indeed "true", that depends on how insane you think Mankar Camoran is, or whether you think there are manipulations further than what the games make clear. Nonetheless, it provides an interesting window into his mind, and once you've finished the main story, it also puts on full display his manipulation of his followers with the promise of Paradise.

As all pieces of information within the Commentaries that can be cross-checked appear to be true (even if lacking in information, or deliberately misleading), one has to wonder whether some of the other pieces of information Camoran offers also have some truth to them.

Reminder: Daedric does not technically include the characters x or y. Because of this, they have been removed from the Daedric version of this text, and bracketed in the translation.

DAGON

DAGON

Greetings, novitiate, and know first a reassurance: Mankar Camoran was once like ou, asleep, unwise, protonmic. We mortals leave the dreaming-sleeve of birth the same, unmantled save for the smbiosis with our mothers, thus to practice and thus to rapprochement, until finall we might through new ees leave our hearths without need or fear that she remains behind. In this moment we destro her forever and enter the demesne of Lord Dagon.

"Greetings, novitiate, and know first a reassurance: Mankar Camoran was once like (y)ou, asleep, unwise, proton(y)mic.1 We mortals leave the dreaming-sleeve2 of birth the same, unmantled3 save for the s(y)mbiosis with our mothers, thus to practice and thus to rapprochement, until finall(y) we might through new e(y)es leave our hearths without need or fear that she remains behind. In this moment we destro(y) her forever and enter the demesne of Lord Dagon.4"

  1. The use of protonymic here is interesting. Nymics generally refer to the true names of daedra, however there are some scant references to mortals having nymics too. Lesser daedra species without self awareness generally have only protonymics as opposed to also possessing neonymics, egonymics, etc., essentially having only one name. It may be that Camoran is using protonymic as a metaphor for being unaware. The other possibility is, however, if we consider mortals as possessing nymics too, that it was literally possible for him to gain nymics beyond just a protonymic. This, however, implies that mortals are only normally in possession of a protonymic, which seems to go against the idea of purely protonymic creatures not being self aware, unless there is a mortal/daedra split.

  2. Dreaming-sleeve is difficult to define for the moment, as it's used completely differently in every known context. On purely grammatical terms, it may simply be a metaphor for the experience of pre-birth.

  3. Camoran seems to consider the symbiosis between unborn child and mother as a kind of mantling, which is a concept generally defined as attaining godhood by acting in the way of a chosen entity, thereby becoming it. He also posits that a mantling is not something that one can be born with (which makes sense, because that would be incarnation).

  4. Most telling is Camoran's usage of demesne, which marks a domain owned by someone (in this case, Mehrunes Dagon). While Dagon is known as the Prince of Destruction, he is also associated with change, and the process of being born is one of the biggest changes someone can undergo. It makes sense that by "destroying" the mother (leaving her womb, and rendering her no longer pregnant; in effect destroying the pregnancy), this would be in Dagon's domain, despite the lack of literal destruction in the process.

Reader, this book is our door to that demesne, and though ou be a destroer ou must still submit to locks. Lord Dagon would onl have those clever enough to pause; all else the Aurbis claims in their fool running. Walk first. Heed. The impatience ou feel is our first slave to behead.

"Reader, this book is (y)our door to that demesne, and though (y)ou be a destro(y)er (y)ou must still submit to locks.1 Lord Dagon would onl(y) have those clever enough to pause; all else the Aurbis claims in their fool running.2 Walk first. Heed. The impatience (y)ou feel is (y)our first slave to behead."

  1. The locks Camoran speaks of are almost certainly the challenges a novitiate must undergo in order to be accepted into the Mythic Dawn.

  2. Mehrunes Dagon apparently does not like hasty and/or stupid bastards. It makes me wonder if, despite being the Lord of Destruction, he does not like thoughtless destruction? Perhaps it must be thoughtful in order to please him? Or else, perhaps Mankar Camoran does not like hasty/stupid bastards himself, because their actions may put the Mythic Dawn at risk. Those too hasty are left to their fate in the universe (Aurbis) (and presumably not a good one if the Mythic Dawn prevails).

Enter as Lord Dagon has written: come slow and bring four kes. Know that then ou are roalt, a new breed of destroer, whose garden shall flood with flowers known and unknown, as it was in the mthic dawn. Thus shall ou return to our first primal wail and et come out different. It shall this time be neonmbiosis, master akin to Master, whose Mother is miasma.

"Enter as Lord Dagon has written: come slow and bring four ke(y)s.1 Know that then (y)ou are ro(y)alt(y), a new breed of destro(y)er,2 whose garden shall flood with flowers known and unknown, as it was in the m(y)thic dawn.3 Thus shall (y)ou return to (y)our first primal wail and (y)et come out different. It shall this time be neon(y)mbiosis, master akin to Master, whose Mother is miasma."

  1. Clearly the keys are the four volumes of the Commentaries.

  2. The destroyer, I imagine, is what initiates will become after suffering in Camoran's pocket dimension for long enough (and in the right way).

  3. Needs research: What specifically is the Mythic Dawn? Not the cult, but the actual event.

There's a lot going on in this paragraph that I need to look into.

Ever quarter has known us, and none bore our passing ecept with trembling. Perhaps ou came to us through war, or stud, or shadow, or the alignment of certain snakes. Though each path matters in its kind, the prize is alwas thus: welcome, novitiate, that ou are here at all means that ou have the worthiness of kings. Seek th pocket now, and look! There is the first ke, glinting with the light of a new dawn.

Night follows da, and so know that this primar insight shall fall alike unto the turbulent evening sea where all faiths are tested. Again, a reassurance: even the Usurper went under the Iliac before he rose up to claim his fleet. Fear onl for a second. Shaken belief is like water for a purpose: in the garden of the Dawn we shall breathe whole realities.

M own summons came through a book Lord Dagon wrote himself in the deserts of rust and wounds. Its name is the 'Msterium Ares', Aldmeretada aggregate, forefather to the wife of all enigma. Each word is razor-fed and secret, thinner than cataclsms, tarnished like red-drink. That I mention it at all is testament to our new rank, m child. Our name is now cut into its weight.

Roaring I wandered until I grew hoarse with the gospel. I had read the msteries of Lord Dagon and feeling anew went mad with the overflow. M words found no purchase until I became hidden.
